Babysitting Basics (Ages 11-16)

A must for beginning babysitters! Safety, child-tending skills and basic first aid are covered. A workbook is also given to take home. Receive a certificate upon completion of class. Participants should bring a doll to class. Location: Fountain View Recreation Center, Carol Stream.

Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People (Ages 12 & Up)

In just a few hours, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to give you years of musical enjoyment. Learn to play piano the way professionals do-using chords. Since this class is being held online with ZOOM, you will be able to sit at your piano or keyboard at home and take this course with no pressure at all. And since this course includes an online book and online follow up video lessons, you will be able to continue to practice and study on your own. An optional periodic online question and answer session is also included. A recording of the class is included as well. The course is partly lecture/demonstration and partly hands on instruction. This class will emphasize the learning of Christmas songs. Topics include: How chords work in a song, how to get more out of sheet music by reading less of it, how to form the three main types of chords, how to handle different keys and time signatures, how to avoid “counting”, and how to simplify over 12,000 complex chords.

Young Rembrandts Drawing (Ages 5-12): Superhero Cartoons

Superhero Cartoons: Pow! Bang! Wow! Now you can learn to draw your own comic book superhero. We will complete several drawings while we explore a variety of characters. Learn to draw the basic muscular superhero body and adapt it to the character of your choice. Draw action & movement to complete scenes around your superheroes. Location: Simkus Recreation Center.

Instant Guitar for Hopelessly Busy People (Ages 12 & Up)

Have you ever wanted to learn the guitar but simply find it difficult to find the time? In just a few hours you can learn enough about playing the guitar to give you years of musical enjoyment, and you won’t have to take private lessons to do it. This crash course will teach you some basic chords and get you playing along with your favorite songs right away. Since this class is being held online with ZOOM, you will be able to sit at home with your guitar and take this class without any pressure at all. And since the class includes an online book and online follow-up video lessons, you will be able to continue to practice and study on your own. An optional periodic online question and answer session is also included. This class will emphasize the learning of Christmas songs. A recording of the class is included as well. Class limited to 15 students. Topics include: How chords work in a song, how to form, the three main types of chords, how to tune your guitar, basic strumming patterns, how to buy a good guitar (things to avoid) and how to play along with simple tunes.

JR Ninjabot Tournament (Ages 5-7)

In this camp, Ninjas will compete in multiple coding and building challenges using both Dash and LEGO robots. Throughout the camp, they will develop and grow their coding skills through Dash and engineering abilities through LEGO. Ninjas will split into team and compete in different Olympic theme events using their designs to see who can come out on top.

Throughout the day, Ninjas will use their skills and knowledge to craft a variety of tools in Redstone, including lightbulbs, levers, switches, and more advanced components.

With a focus on introducing basic coding concepts, campers will work with coding games like hide-and-seek, a simple clicker game, and a maze. Throughout camp, kids will have a blast remixing these games into their very own creations. They will learn to design unique backgrounds, create charming characters, and explore the endless possibilities of game design. Each day offers new opportunities for discovery and innovation, building a strong foundation in coding while keeping the experience fun and fantastic!

In this camp, Ninjas will explore Artificial Intelligence (AI) by utilizing and tinkering with a variety of tools, games, and resources. Ninjas will teach AI using image recognition through Google’s Teachable Machine that will allow them to control things in Scratch programs. Ninjas will also explore AI through multiple interactive simulations, such as Quick Draw, Magic Sketch Pad, Evolution, and ArtBot.

This class is a whirlwind of hands-on fun, combining the wonders of engineering, circuitry, and coding. Campers will unleash their creativity as they dive into making their own paper circuits, crafting a DIY flashlight, and designing a paper computer with Makey Makey. But the adventure doesn’t stop there! Trailblazers will also explore coding by bringing projects to life with the micro:bit and building a LEGO marble maze. To close out the class, they’ll harness all their newfound skills to create a one-of-a-kind interactive board game, showcasing their inventive spirit and problem-solving prowess.
